    SPENCER 1860 CARBINE    SOLD

This carbine is the model 1860.  This example is late in the production and shows use.  The barrel markings are sharp and readable.  The serial number shows it was issued to Sgt. John Matchett, Co K 7th Indiana Cavalry in November 1865 in Texas. John served in the 53rd Ohio Infantry before he enlisted in the 7th Indiana Cav.

The carbine itself show use.  There are traces of finish in parts of the breechblock but the rest of the metal is a smooth grey patina.  The markings are clear and strong.  The action is strong and crisp.  The wood is solid and shows wear.  The cartouche are not visible.  There is a crack on the buttstock near the tube magazine.  There the a small repair in the wood behind the receiver where a tang sight was mounted.     SOLD
