P1861 Cartridge Box with Sling and both plates.
This set is the complete cartridge box with sling, both plates and tins. This is how the Union soldier carried his cartridges. This pattern was adopted in 1861 and went into production quickly. In the summer of 1862 the Federal Government started requiring contractors to mark their products. This example is unmarked so it is from earlier production contracts, either late 1861 or the first half of 1862. The leather is solid and complete with tight stitching. Both buckles are present. The latch tab is intact. The leather finish has some age cracking but the leather is stable and strong.
