    Manhattan Pistol Series III   SOLD

Manhattan produced revolvers of the Colt Design in 1859.  They come in 31 and 36 Caliber.  While few were purchased by the US Military they were a  popular pistol of the time and many were purchased by soldiers.

This example is the Series III which was produced from September 1861 until April 1864 with a total production of about 30,000.  Series III started production in the 14.500 serial number range.  This example being in the 25,000 serial number range should date in the first third of the production.  It is marked on the barrel with "MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS CO, NEWARK NJ".  The barrel address on this example is clear and readable.  The cylinder has a good amount of the scene remaining.  The cylinder is also marked with the patent information. The cylinder has 12 stops to provide a stop for the half cock position,   This is a 5 shot 36 caliber single action percussion revolver.  The action on this one is strong.  The metal is a pleasing grey patina with some scattered areas of light pitting.  The wood grips are solid with almost all of the varnish remaining.  The wedge screw is missing.  The serial numbers are sharp and deep and matching.  I did not check the wedge.
