CONFEDERATE RIFLE CARTRIDGE BOX

Confederate cartridge boxes often are based on US patterns and differ on various details.  This cartridge box has several details that are indications of  Confederate construction.  The box is based on the pattern 1839 Rifle box .  It is designed to be worn only on the waist belt.  There are no provisions for attaching a shoulder belt.  This box has two waist belt loops that are sewn to the body of the box.  This box has an inner flap and implement pouch.  There is a single tin that is quite interesting.  The back of the tin shows it was made from 4 smaller pieces of tin.  This box has a lead finial.   The box had the outer flap cut off, probably during its time of service.
