    1858 Starr 44 cal revolver

The Starr 1858 revolver was produced into 1863 with over 23000 made.  The Army purchased around 19000.  The revolver has a distinctive action which is an early form of double action.  Pulling the trigger locks the hammer and rotates the cylinder.  There is a small trigger against the back of the triggerguard that actually releases the hammer to fire the pistol.  On the rear of the big trigger is a sliding piece with a hump.  When positioned correctly, this bump aligns with the rear trigger, so it will release the hammer when the large trigger is pulled completely to the rear.

This example is complete and has a grey brown patina with some areas of light pitting. The markings are all readable and the action is good.  The serial numbers on the front frame, rear frame, hammer and cylinder match.  The wood grips are solid with some dings from use.  Both cartouches are visible and readable.
