1841 Mississippi - Colt Conversion Bayonet
In 1861 Samual Colt purchased 10,000 1841 rifles and added saber bayonets. The rifle barrels, split rings and bayonets were marked with a serial number. Most were sold to the Federal Government though Connecticut purchased a number of these altered 1841s. Deliveries were completed by June 1862. A split metal ring clamped on the barrel to provide a bayonet lug for this saber bayonet. The bayonet has a 25 inch long blade.
This blade is marked 1861. On the top of the grip is the serial number 1508 and an inspector's initial "G". The blade is a grey color with scattered areas of light pitting. The leather scabbard is full length and has a brass button on the throat. The leather is stable with some finish loss. The seam has some areas of weakness. Still it displays well.
