Springfield 1842 Musket with CS Cleaned and repair inspection mark
This 1842 musket is dated 1852 on the lock. The barrel date is indistinct. 1842 muskets were commonly used at the start of the war. The Confederacy gathered material from the battlefield for reuse. This example has the "Q" stamp in the wood in front of the triggerguard which is attributed to Richmond system. While this musket shows wear. it is still very solid and with the exception of the barrel date, the marks in the metal are clear. The metal is a smooth grey patina with scattered areas of pitting, The stock is solid and full length. It has dings and nicks of actual service and is a little dry.
